Polybutylene (poly-B), often known by the “Qest” fittings used to join it, was installed in millions of homes between roughly 1978 and 1995 as a cheap, flexible alternative to copper. Central Florida’s building boom during those decades means a large share of area homes still have it today.

Chlorine and chloramine in municipal water slowly attack polybutylene and its fittings from the inside out, causing the pipe to scale, weaken, and eventually fail — often suddenly, and often behind a wall or under a slab. It was discontinued in the mid-1990s and is no longer used in new construction.
