Most Disposals Can Be Fixed

A garbage disposal that hums, trips, or leaks at the top is usually repairable in one visit. The motor is rarely the problem. What we find under Orlando sinks is a jammed flywheel, a tripped overload switch, a worn sink flange, or a loose dishwasher connection, and none of those need a new unit.

The one that does is a leak from the bottom of the housing. That means the grinding chamber has rusted or cracked through, and the fix is a replacement. We carry units on the truck, so if that is what you have, the new one goes in the same visit. Either way you get the diagnosis and a written price first.

Try This First

FIRSTSwitch It Off

Flip the wall switch off and, if you can, the breaker too. Never put your hand in the disposal, even when it is off. Use tongs or pliers to pull out anything you can see.

SECONDPress the Reset Button

There is a small red button on the bottom of the unit. If it has popped out, press it back in. A tripped overload is the single most common reason a disposal goes silent.

THIRDTurn the Flywheel

Most units have a hex socket in the centre of the bottom. A quarter inch allen key turned back and forth frees a jam. If it will not budge with reasonable force, stop. Forcing it damages the motor.

FOURTHCheck for Water Underneath

Run the tap for thirty seconds with the disposal off and look under the sink with a flashlight. Water at the top or side is a seal or connection. Water from the bottom of the body is a replacement.

FIFTHStop Running Water Into a Leak

If it is leaking, put a bucket under it and stop using the sink. Water inside a cabinet swells the floor in a day and the repair for that costs more than the disposal.

The Four Ways a Disposal Fails

01Hums But Won't Spin

The motor is getting power but the flywheel is stuck. Usually a bone, a fruit pit, a bottle cap, or a build up of fibrous waste. We clear the jam and check the bearings. If the flywheel is seized from rust rather than debris, that is a replacement.

02Leaking

Top leaks are the sink flange or the putty under it. Side leaks are the dishwasher inlet or the drain elbow. Both are repairs. A leak from the bottom of the body means the chamber has corroded through and the unit is done.

03Dead, No Sound

Reset button, then breaker, then the switch and wiring. If all of those check out and the motor still does nothing, the motor has failed. On a unit past ten years old we replace it rather than rebuild it.

04Drains Slowly or Backs Up

Often not the disposal at all. The clog is in the P-trap or the drain line beyond it, and it shares that line with the dishwasher. We clear it properly rather than grinding harder. See drain cleaning Orlando.

How much does garbage disposal repair cost in Orlando?+

It depends on what has failed. Clearing a jam or resealing a flange is a small repair. A replacement is more, and the price moves with the horsepower and brand you choose. What we commit to is a written price after the plumber has looked at it and before any work starts. You approve it first, and that is the number on the invoice.

Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?+

On the bottom of the unit, usually a small red button near the centre or the edge. If it has popped out, the overload tripped. Switch the disposal off, wait a minute, press the button in, then try again. If it trips again straight away there is a jam or a failing motor and it needs a plumber.

My disposal hums but does not spin. Is it dead?+

Almost never. Humming means the motor has power but the flywheel is stuck. Switch it off, then turn the hex socket on the bottom with an allen key to free the jam. If it will not turn, do not force it. We clear seized flywheels without damaging the motor and only replace the unit if the flywheel is rusted solid.

The disposal is leaking from the bottom. Can it be repaired?+

No. A leak from the bottom of the body means the internal seal has failed or the grinding chamber has rusted through. Neither can be fixed from the outside. Leaks from the top flange or the side connections are repairable, so it is worth checking exactly where the water is coming from before deciding.

What should never go down a garbage disposal?+

Grease and cooking oil, which cool and coat the drain line. Fibrous vegetables like celery, corn husks and onion skins, which wrap the flywheel. Coffee grounds and eggshells, which settle in the trap. Pasta and rice, which swell. Bones, fruit pits and anything hard. And never chemical drain cleaners, which damage the seals and are dangerous to the plumber who opens the unit next.

Do you install new garbage disposals the same day?+

Usually, yes. Our trucks carry common 1/3 to 1 horsepower units, so if yours needs replacing we can fit the new one on the same visit, with a new sink flange, a fresh dishwasher connection, and the old unit hauled away.
